If Trevor and I were to install wiki software on the Disseminary site, what would the multitudes of experts out there recommend? Are any (a) relatively inexpensive and (b) amenable to at least minimal design enhancement?
Posted by AKMA at June 19, 2003 10:49 AM | TrackBackI was just thinking that there might be some very good ways to wiki-ize the disseminary. If we wanted to start some kind of theological encyclopedia at some point ... For class discussions ... Because it give us the excuse to use another icon ...
Posted by: Trevor Bechtel at June 19, 2003 11:32 AMThere are a number of good free implementations. Depends on what you server platform is to some extent. I'd be willing to help you out on an evaluation based on your needs and such.
Posted by: Gerry at June 19, 2003 12:19 PMYou may have noticed that Wikis are highly polarizing constructs. Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em (like, for example, Burningbird).
The key thing, I think, is to establish the context and expected behavior very very clearly up front. Still, all it takes is one bad actor to make the thing really an unpleasant experience.
Just my $.02. (I'm not a Wiki lover... too Wild, Wild West for me.)
Posted by: Pascale Soleil at June 19, 2003 02:53 PMI admit to being suspicious — but I want to find out for myself. Still interested in specific implementations of wikiware (and their costs).
Posted by: AKMA at June 19, 2003 03:38 PMMy only experience with Wikis has been the Vikipedio (http://www.vikipedio.com/), but that's been pretty positive. I especially like the idea of a theological encyclopedia.

Most of the heavy-duty wikis I've seen use Python-based MoinMoin. I know you can do this via Cornerhost, because Sam is and he's a customer also. He might help you with setup, in fact, if he's got time (I don't want to volunteer him without his knowledge or consent, but he *is* a nice guy).
I'd offer, but I've never run a wiki. If you're stuck and you *need* help, though, I'll get it running on my own Cornerhost account and then let you know how to do it on yours.
I'm not a wiki fan either -- not authorship issues; I just find them incredibly opaque to navigate.
