AKMA's Random Thoughts

Word Problem

Margaret is studying her math.

She encounters the following problem: If ice cream comes in five different flavors — pistachio, mint, vanilla, chocolate, and coffee — and the ice cream is sold in packages of two flavors per pack, randomly assigned, what is the chance that any given two-pack you buy contains mint?

Margaret’s answer: “Zero chance. I wouldn’t buy any at all, because only an idiot would buy ice cream in randomly-assigned two-flavor packages.”

Well, the math says that 40% of the packages would contain mint ice cream, assuming all containers carry two different flavors; but I'm with Margaret. None of them would be in my grocery cart, either.

In my ideal society, they'd be giving away the ice cream. (That's pretty much how I learned to like pistachio.) This is clear evidence of the right-wing bias in our school systems.

Well, I'm inclined to believe that school systems are full of all sorts of biases, but in the interest of full disclosure--and a more radical social critique--I should note that I'm studying these mathmatical "life skills" as part of a Kaplan course in GRE prep, some many decades after I was supposed to have learned them in the public school system. And, now that you mention it, when I was in early elementary school (in MA), we did sometimes have free icecream--little carboard cups of vanilla icecream with a flat cardboard flat "spoon." They were called Hoodsies, and they appeared at celebratory times. But, back to the present, it appears that in order for me to persue a PhD in theology, I need to know how to package mint and pistachio ice cream) and this is only the first week of classes). I'm pretty sure Aquinas had very little to say about ice cream, but if he did, he certainly would not have approved of that particular combination.

Oh, Margaret, that puts a whole different spin on the issue. The question then becomes, which combination would Aquinas then approve, and what would his theological argument involve?

Or, in the modern sound bite vernacular, "What Would Jesus Eat?"
