AKMA's Random Thoughts

April 02, 2004

One Week Ago

Almost a week ago, I off-handedly suggested that we make an audiobook out of Lawrence Lessig’s Free Culture. It seemed a logical extension of the book’s premise and of the spirit in which he released the book under a Creative Commons license. At the time, I figured that a friend or two would chip in a chapter, that I’d probably have to read three or four, and that in the end we’d have a jolly little entertainment of it. Show’s how much I know!

I won’t re-link all the different contributions at this point; I’ll point to my most recent link-by-link post, instead. We have new contributions of Chapter Thirteen by The Sessums, (and I just noticed a version by iolaire, too!), Tim Samoff’s version of the Afterword, and some new material from Raph Levien in his audiobook zone. Raph got halfway into Chapter Ten; I’ll try to finish it off over the weekend. Giles thinks his version of Chapter Ten will be ready soon.

Raph also started reading Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, which I’m tempted to try to finish off (with your help, if you’re interested).

I want to point to two more sites: one is a streaming-audio version out at Scott Matthews’s site (complete with photos of the readers, and biographical sketches — if you’ve been hankering for media immortality, this may be your big opportunity).

The other is Aaron Swartz’s wiki version of Free Culture, which I should have linked to before just on principle (a wiki of Free Culture is so right). But now, it’s positively necessary, because Aaron took the step that ought to have occurred to me as soon as I saw the wiki: he’s wikified a directory of linked files. Thanks to Aaron, in fact, I won’t be making any more of those chapter-by-chapter link lists, but will always just point to Aaron’s place. Ευχαριστω!

I was missing SXSW, and reading last weekend made me feel a little like I was back there again. Thank you, AKMA.

Did not bother to watch Mel Gibson's S&M flick, and was wondering if anyone out there knows wheather or not anyone with backbone might be producing a film that chronicles the catholic rape of children over and over again in an even longer format than Mel's film.

Part one of Chapter 10 has been posted.

Sorry it's taking so long.
