I got a solid seven hours’ sleep last night, hurrah!, despite spending 40 minutes or so awake in the middle of the night (yah booo!). I woke too late to do anything more than make a cup of coffee and swill it, have a wee bite of fruit, say MP and rush to the shower, then head in for the early service at St Nic’s. Had a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll — for the sake of staying awake, not cos I like them! — before continuing down to St Helen’s for the 10:30 service.
Both services went well, no disruptive coughing jags or drowning in tides of snot. The sermon was well received, which honestly startled me, since I thought there were one or two really easy-to-spot places where it began faltering and could have used a once-over for structural improvements and rhetorical continuity enhancement. But if people grasp onto it and find it beneficial, I’m not going to tell them that they’re wrong. I was going to pass it by, since (as I said) it’s composed from bits and bobs of a past sermon; but I’ll pop it up here anyway, trusting that readers can both see the flaws I perceived (and more!), and discern for themselves the quality of the whole.
Maybe I’ll walk tomorrow morning, get some miles in.
I did not think this was a bad sermon.
Thank you for that generous sentiment. I reckon I don’t have a reliable perspective on my own work.
