Care to explain what and where this is? I’ve never seen anything like it.
This is the dining room hearth in the Big House on Nantucket, where we gathered with my sister and my cousins (whom I reckon up by dozens) and my aunts. Joe Biden is on-island for the holiday, but he didn’t join us.
I built the dining-room fire, which burnt well and long. Uncle Bob built the living-room fire, which also burned well. Josiah built the fire in the back room, which smoked up the whole house and had to be extinguished.
Mom was there too!
Absolutely — although “mother” doesn’t figure in Sir Joseph Porter’s “I am the monarch of the sea” song.
