It might have been a static charge, especially in these cold and dry autumn days. I once fried an iBook battery with a strong (and painful) static spark to my track pad. A touch, a snap, a yelp and a jump, and a few minutes later I noticed that my menu bar battery icon was giving me an angry red X. Applecare replaced it free the same day.
