Lazy Web Query

I’ll be teaching a “New Testament Ethics” course next year. I plan to assign Richard Hays’s Moral Vision, Frank Matera’s NT Ethics, Wayne Meeks’s Origins of Christian Morality, Richard Burridge’s Imitating Jesus, and. . . one more book. My ideal choice would be a feminist analysis of the ethos of the New Testament, not concentrating on sexual behaviour (but not avoiding it, either). Most of my Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza books are in storage in the USA, so I can’t just hop over to the shelf and choose among them. Nominations?

  1. There are a few chapters on ethics in the “Postmodern Bible Reader.” Do you think that some of Levinas’ writings would be of use?

  2. What level is this? I find Schüssler Fiorenza very hard work, although she gets better as she goes on. I don’t have any alternative suggestion off the top of my head, but even with a serious commitment to reading feminist theology I found her work, especially her early work, not particularly accessible.

  3. Good question, Judy. It’s for an Honours level course, so I can ask a wee bit more of them than I might at Level One or Two.

  4. I’d recommend, on top of the other texts, Yoder’s classic text The Politics of Jesus.

From the Feminist perspective, I’d recommend Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz’s En La Lucha. A Feminist-Hispanic gem. Also, I’d recommend one of the readers by Amy-Jill Levine.
